A bit more info about these remixes…
Back in 2006, Gulf War Two was raging in Iraq. Day after day telly screens were filled with the smug mug of US cowboy president George W Bush weaving platitudes about surgically striking “shock and awe” into the baddies, while apparently leaving the goodies without a scratch. Around the same time, artists such as David Byrne, Brian Eno, and Peter Gabriel were opening up their old 24 track recordings for the public to remix. A match made in heaven… or hell…
BUSH OF GEORGE David Byrne & Brian Eno (& George W Bush) remixed by Simon Le Boggit in 2006 * This is Simon Le Boggit’s remix of HELP ME SOMEBODY by DAVID BYRNE and BRIAN ENO, from their groundbreaking 1981 album MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS. Strongly featuring the cut-up voice of George W Bush rapping and virtually singing, this remix dominated the BUSH OF GHOSTS REMIXED website charts for over two years, generating some encouraging comments from around the netosphere. e.g. |
.
"a clever, funny, angry and seriously infectious remix" - hopeful amphibian (UK)
"hilarious!" - Thierry Castaing (on Mulltron) "fiendishly awe inspiring." - mrgrum (on StumbleUpon) "priceless" - Hotlblack Desiato (Fremantle, Western Australia) "Wonderful way to break the hypnotic daily tv/radio ramblings of politics." - Erik's Choice (Detroit, United States) "it's a real good one and hope to find a way to download it or something." - The Distant Outpost (on Blogger) |
The obvious synchronicity of the word “bush” made it feel like a collision between Bush Of Ghosts and George W Bush was meant to be. This sense of the inevitable was enhanced by the fact that, back in 1984, the album My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts had inspired Simon Le Boggit to create a cut-up voice rap-track called VIOLENCE AND INTIMIDATION, featuring then US President Ronnie Reagan and UK Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher. The track was played as an intro for MENTAL HEALTH gigs - the audience were perplexed before the band even hit the stage!

BUSH TELEGRAPH (MUSIC FOR 18 MUSICIANS & MEGALOMANIAC)
Steve Reich (& George W Bush) remixed by Simon Le Boggit in 2006 * This is Simon Le Boggit's remix of MUSIC FOR 18 MUSICIANS (SECTION VI) by STEVE REICH. The inspiration for this remix first appeared in news reports over a decade ago - first in New Scientist magazine in 1993, and later in British national newspapers such as the Sunday Telegraph in 1997 - but then it mysteriously fell off the media radar. A good summary of quotes from that era can be found in the article "Using phones as remote controlled bugging devices".
The possibility of land-line phones being taken "off the hook" by remote control, to listen to nearby conversions, subsequently received mention in a European Union interim report (Jan 1998), but appears to have been omitted from the final report nine months later. Spooky? |
"BUSH TELEGRAPH ~ absolutely brilliant!" - Steven Severin (Siouxsie & The Banshees) via MySpace
* This remix was created for the Steve Reich Remixed competition run by Mary Ann Hobbs' Breezeblock programme at BBC Radio One (it didn't win). The original piece of Steve Reich's music which formed the basis for remixers continues to be available for free download from the BBC here. If you are unfamiliar with Steve Reich's music, it's worth a listen.

SHOCK AND AWE ME
Peter Gabriel remixed by Simon Le Boggit in 2006 * Third in the Bushy trilogy, this is Simon Le Boggit’s remix of the 1982 worldwide hit SHOCK THE MONKEY by PETER GABRIEL. This radical reworking features Peter Gabriel singing new war-weary lyrics in a harsh and emotional duet with George W Bush. Many thanks to Peter Gabriel for allowing his voice to be chopped around.
